A deck bench usually seats two people comfortably on a deck. The bench is made of lumber and is relatively simple to construct. The materials are affordable and easily accessible in most local hardware stores, and some kits are even available for easier and more convenient assembly.

Instructions
- Before starting construction, make a design that includes the dimension of the bench you want to assemble. These dimensions will depend on how big you want the bench to be and determine the measurement of your wood pieces.
- When buying materials inquire about types of wood and buy the one most suited to your preference.
- Create the base by first using a saw to cut four pieces of wood. Set two pieces upright and place the other two pieces between them. Affix the four pieces together securely with screws. Make one base per 3-4 feet of the seat’s length.
- Use 2×4 or 2×2 to make the bench seat. Set each seat with half an inch of space. Connect the seat boards with screws and ensure the pieces are all of equal length before putting the other pieces in place. Fasten the proportional pieces with screws or nails, ensuring the screw heads are approximately 1/8” deep.
- Saw a couple of 1×4 boards and fit them onto the seats securely. Eliminate any rough edges with a sander or a router. When finished, clear away excess splinters or dirt off the seats.
- If it is to your liking, paint or apply wood stain to the bench. Allow the paint or stain to cure overnight before using.
Tips and warnings
- To conceal the screws, after countersinking, cut a circular piece of wood and put it on top, setting it on the screw hole with glue.
- The height of the deck bench is subjective and can be made to your liking. For a good reference measure the height of your favorite chair and apply those dimensions.
- If painting the bench, never use lead paint; it can cause adverse effects such as dizziness and lead poisoning if accidentally ingested. Regardless of the type of paint or stain being used, wear a mask when painting.
- When painting or staining, use long strokes that are smooth and consistent. Only apply a couple of layers as too many layers will take a very long time to dry.
- Work in a clear workspace away from distractions and foot traffic. Segregate your tools and materials so they are easily accessible; you will work more efficiently.
- Remember that if you have children, or if children will be visiting, the walls of your deck should be high enough that they cannot climb over using the bench.
