How to Build a Gazebo

Gazebos are not only great additions to gardens, and yard spaces, they are also quite multifunctional. A gazebo offers shade from sun during hot summers, and can also be convenient to have during special events like weddings and other celebrations. Assembling a gazebo will cost anywhere between $2,500 and $5,000 US. If you plan to undertake this project, ensure you have experience in carpentry; this project is not suitable for beginners.

Materials

  • Screws
  • Landscape marking paint
  • Quick-setting concrete
  • Gazebo kit
  • 2”x4”x8’ pressure treated posts
  • 2”x10”x12’ cedar planks
  • 2”x6”x12’ cedar planks
  • 3’x4’6’ snapped steps
  • Decking screws

Tools

  • Shovels
  • Post hole digger
  • Rakes
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Hammer
  • Screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Measuring tape
  • Reciprocal saw

Instructions

  1. The first step is to place the posts into the ground, to do this: mark the deck area where the posts will be installed using landscape marking paint.
  2. Remove plants and debris from that area then dig a hole 30” deep with a posthole digger. Place the posts into the ground and fill the holes with prepared concrete mix.
  3. Using cedar planks, screw the posts together, making sure that the frame is level. Use an adequate amount of joists in the centre to support the deck’s framing; add a centre post and cross supports. With deck screws, affix the cedar plants securely to the frame.
  4. With the deck flooring completed, assemble the gazebo and attach it to the flooring. Instead of building the gazebo components from scratch–which would be challenging and time consuming–use a gazebo kit that comes equipped with the pre fabricated pieces. The kit will make this part of the construction easier, and the only requirement is a close following of the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. To build the wall, screw the tongue and groove boards together ensuring they’re securely attached. Assemble the roof and add the shingles.
  6. With screws, affix the gazebo structure securely to the floor boards.
  7. Construct steps to connect the yard to the gazebo, to complete the project.
  8. The gazebo can be painted either before, or after assembling all the parts. Use a no-lead, non-toxic wood paint, or add a wood stain to achieve a desired look. Ensure you use a paint or stain that is weather resistant and will not chip or peel off.
  9. If you decide to paint the gazebo, allow the paint or stain to cure for approximately 24 hours, or until completely dry before putting it to use.

Tips and warnings

  • When cutting boards to fit, ensure to wear safety goggles and gloves for protection. When painting or working with wood stain, always wear a protective mask to protect your respiratory system from the dangerous fumes.
  • The guide may look at first glance, like a simple project. However, this project will span at least several weekends, and will cause intensive labour. If you are not seasoned in construction, do enlist the help of a professional to construct the gazebo.
